Introduction

Christ the Redeemer Primary School in Belfast has been committed to creating an inclusive, supportive environment for all pupils. Working with Creative Activity over several years, the school has implemented a number of sensory solutions designed to help children regulate their emotions and prepare for learning. Most recently, they’ve introduced sensory circuits in key areas of the school to further support this mission.

 

Background

Led by Vice Principal Nicola McKeown, Christ the Redeemer has a strong focus on wellbeing and adaptive learning environments. The school caters for children across a wide spectrum of needs, including a recently established special needs unit. Space has always been a challenge, with classrooms designed to flow out into corridors where dynamic, engaging learning takes place daily. Over the years, the school has worked closely with Gavin from Creative Activity, who has been a consistent and trusted partner in helping them design and implement sensory solutions that fit their evolving needs.

 

The Challenge

With a growing number of children presenting with regulation needs, the school recognised the importance of offering dedicated, purposeful spaces that could support self-regulation without removing children entirely from their learning environments. The corridors, while already used creatively, needed structure for sensory regulation. The challenge was to incorporate a solution that would be accessible, effective, and integrated into the school’s daily rhythm—without requiring additional rooms or compromising learning space.

 

The Solution

 

Creative Activity designed and installed bespoke sensory circuits in three key areas:

  • The Foundation Stage corridor

  • The Nursery Unit

  • The Special Needs Unit

These corridors were transformed into sensory pathways that guide children through a sequence of alerting, organising, and calming activities—helping them regulate their energy levels and emotions. Each circuit was tailored to meet the developmental needs of the children using them, while fitting seamlessly into the school’s existing space and routine.

 

Results

The impact has been immediate and wide-reaching. The circuits are used not only by children with additional needs but by mainstream pupils as well. Teachers and practitioners have found them invaluable as tools to support emotional regulation, ensuring that children are calm, focused, and ready to learn. The repurposed corridors now serve dual functions—enhancing both movement and mindfulness—while maintaining their role in everyday education and play.

The circuits empower classroom practitioners to respond in real-time to children who may be showing signs of being dysregulated, allowing them to step out, reset, and return to learning with minimal disruption. The school reports smoother transitions, improved behaviour, and a stronger sense of emotional safety throughout the day.
